Welcome to Alexander City, a unique community nestled in the heart of east central Alabama. Alexander City residents place a premium on quality of life. Our city is unlike most cities with a population of 16,000. It is much more prosperous and progressive, and boasts a very low crime rate and affordable cost-of-living. In addition, we enjoy a trade area population of approximately 125,000.
We have an outstanding public school system, active churches, exceptional health services, lovely homes, and beautiful Lake Martin, providing the embarkation point to unlimited recreational opportunities.
Alexander City is a pivotal point for transportation. We are located only 78 miles southeast of Birmingham, 55 miles northeast of Montgomery, 123 miles southwest of Atlanta, and 70 miles northwest of Columbus, GA. US Highway 280 runs through Alexander City connecting cities from Birmingham to Savannah, GA, and interstate highways 85 and 65 are less than an hour away. Twelve motor freight carriers serve the city daily and interchange with other carriers throughout the United States, and ground freight delivery to the city is available on a daily basis. Russell Field, Alexander City’s municipal airport, is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, provides 5400 feet of lighted runway, and offers service to executive jet aircraft.
Rail service is provided by Norfolk Southern Railroad. Alexander City is proud to boast a healthy business climate. Our local economy is based upon textile and apparel manufacturing, foundries, wood products, store fixtures, health services, and distribution. Aliant National, SouthTrust Bank, Regions Bank, and Colonial Bank, as well as several savings and loan institutions, are extremely prosperous and supported by our community.
Russell Medical Center is a private, non-profit, 80-bed acute care facility. The medical staff is comprised of 64 physicians representing 32 medical specialties and sub-specialties. Services provided include home health, hospice, cardiac rehabilitation, physical therapy, oncology, cardiac catheterization, and a Women’s Center. Over the past five years the hospital has invested over 26 million dollars in new technology, construction for new services, and renovation of all patient care areas. The hospital has been successful in maintaining its status as the lowest cost provider in Alabama when adjusted for Case Mix Index, acuity, and Average Length of Stay. In 1994, the hospital’s Continuing Care Team was nationally recognized by the American Journal of Nursing as one of the most innovative and effective programs in the nation.
Alexander City is quite proud of our public school system, which is well supported by our citizens. Our children grow and learn together as every child in the same grade attends the same school. Kindergarten, first and second grades attend one school, third and fourth grades attend another, fifth and sixth attend another, seventh and eighth attend the middle school, and ninth through twelfth attend the high school. The Tallapoosa-Alexander City Vocational School offers focused instruction in several career clusters, and Central Alabama Community College provides a two year college education to more than 1200 students. The college also offers continuing education courses, and a new Textile and Apparel Technology Center is housed on campus.
Alexander City is blessed with many recreational opportunities. The Charles Bailey Sportplex has a football stadium equal to that of a small college. There are soccer and softball fields, a horse riding arena, gymnasium, swimming pool, picnic area, and the Imagination Station Playground. In addition, senior citizens have a designated building where they enjoy arts and crafts and hold social events. Outdoor activities abound. Deer, turkey, quail, and dove hunting are popular sports. Two nationally recognized hunting plantations, Five Star and Barton Ridge, are located on the outskirts of town. The abundance of rivers and streams allow for great fishing and canoeing. Hiking and camping are also favorite pastimes in our area.
Magnificent Lake Martin, a hydroelectric source created in 1929 and one of the largest man-made lakes in the continental United States, provides 750 miles of wooded shoreline and 44,000 acres of crystal clear water. Lake Martin is arguably the most beautiful recreational lake in the South and is a regional attraction for boating, swimming, skiing, fishing, golfing, and camping. Quaint cabins dot the shoreline, and exclusive lake front developments such as Willow Point, Windemere, Trillium and Stillwaters provide upscale living, and has become a destination for retirees. A new lake front amphitheater is currently under construction which will stage performing arts and cultural events.
From city-wide celebrations such as the Jazz Festival, Oktoberfest, and Hometown Christmas, to cultural events such as the Sarah Towery Art Colony and Alexander City Arts, Inc., our community provides a quality of life that is second to none. We’re a cosmopolitan city with rural values. We’re neighbors caring for neighbors… a community rich with pride and tradition. We welcome you to visit us and explore the uniqueness of Alexander City.
